Artificial Intelligence: Past, Present, and Future

Ms. Aisha Al-Owais, a SAASST research assistant at the meteorite center, presented an online general lecture under the theme "Artificial Intelligence: Past, Present, and the Future." Mrs. Aisha started her talk with a reminder of the origin of the word algorithm and its root in the Islamic scientific heritage through many Muslim scientists like Al-Khwarizmi and others. The introduction of the Arabic numerals proved to be primordial in dealing with

calculation and measurements.

In 1956, a workshop was organized at Dartmouth College by a group of faculty and their students to what is known today as the start of AI. These founders produced computer programs to solve algebra word problems, prove logical theorems, and speak English. In the mid-60s of the last century, the Department of Defense heavily funded AI research in the U.S. Laboratories started to be established worldwide.

AI is everywhere: healthcare, automobile industry, finance, surveillance, social media, entertainment, education, space exploration, gaming, robotics, agriculture, e-commerce… So, our daily lives are strongly interconnected with AI, even with just a simple dial from our mobile.
