Grand Opening of SAASST 40-m Radio Interferometer

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, President of the University of Sharjah, inaugurated the SAASST 40-m Radio Interferometer on Jan. 14 at the Sharjah Academy of Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology.

 

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan was accompanied by HE Prof. Hamid Al-Naimiy, the Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, and Director General of SAASST, and also by the University of Sharjah Board of Trustees.


The radio interferometer uses three small 5-meters radio dishes placed at the vertices of a right triangle to simulate the 40-m interferometer. The system works at 1.4 GHz and will be dedicated to observing any celestial objects in the universe. His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, listened to a comprehensive explanation about the work of the station and its importance for the academy to be a scientific institution specialized in radio astronomy observations.
