Soil – Is it a history or a story of our times?

The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST) at the University of Sharjah received Dr. Daniel Moraetis from the College of Sciences in a lecture entitled: “Soil: Is It a History or a Story of Our Times?.” The lecture explored several elements related to how humanities dealt with harsh environments on Earth and how they survived.

This is to exploit the results of studies done on Earth’s harsh environments with exploring the possibility of life e on other planets such as Mars with particular attention to preparing a habitable environment that can be a source for fresh foods. Dr. Moraetis proposed one example of growing and cultivating food in the harsh environment of Antarctica. Dr. Moraetis discussed the awareness of soil and critical zone observatories, and the significance of soil, past civilizations’ understanding and treatment of soil. A large number of the University of Sharjah’s faculty and staff members and students, as well as astronomy and space sciences enthusiasts, attended the lecture.

This lecture inspired students, faculty members, and researchers of the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology as well as the Department of Applied Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sharjah, and the attendees of the general public of the field of geology and its applications in the space sector.
