Report on the Partial Solar Eclipse

The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology has organized a special observing session for the partial solar eclipse of Oct. 25, 2022. More than 1,000 people witnessed this rare event that will not happen in the United Arab Emirates until Aug. 02, 2027.

Th eclipse started at 2:41 pm, with the maximum at 3:51 pm, with the Moon covering more than 40% of the Sun’s surface. The eclipse ended at 4:54 pm. The total duration of the partial solar eclipse was about 2 hours and 14 minutes.

How can such a small body, the Moon, be able to cover such a large object, the Sun? The Sun is 400 times larger than the Moon and, on average, 390 times farther away, so the Sun and Moon have nearly equal angular diameters of 0.5 degrees, as observed from planet Earth. Thus, the Moon is just the right size to cover the bright disk of the Sun and cause a solar eclipse. If the Moon covers the entire disk of the Sun, we see a total eclipse. We see a partial eclipse if it covers only part of the Sun.
