Mr. Mohammad Shawkat Odeh presented his work to a jury composed of Profs. Ilias Fernini, Dr. Antonios Manousakis, and Prof. Hatem S. Widyan (Dep. of Physics, Al al-Bayt University, Jordan). A large audience attended the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology. The MSc defense was held on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023.
Mr. Odeh developed a PC software to analyze the meteoroids observed in UAE by the UAE Astronomical Cameras Network (UACN) from the year 2017 to 2021. The software is designed to run in three different modes. The first mode is used to assign meteoroids to one single meteor shower. The second mode is used to assign meteoroids to several meteor showers. In contrast, the third mode is designed to link similar meteoroids using the D-criterion method. The user can use any of three well-known criteria: Southworth and Hawkins, Drummond and Jopek.
The UACN observed 76,765 meteoroids from Jan. 01, 2017, to Dec. 31, 2021. The software analyzed these meteoroids. At first, meteoroids linked to known meteor showers listed in the well-established IAU working lists were identified and grouped per year. Then, the remaining were analyzed further, trying to connect some of them. In the end, 12 potential new meteors showers were identified.
