World Ozone Day Lecture Mr. Mohamed Rihan / SAASST Research Assistant

The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology started its series of general lectures for the academic year 2021-2022 with a lecture on the ozone layer to celebrate the "World Ozone Day" of Sep. 16, 2021. Mr. Mohamed Rihan, a research assistant at the academy, presented the online lecture.

The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the sun's rays, thus helping preserve life on the planet. The phaseout of controlled uses of ozone-depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations but have also contributed significantly to global efforts to address climate change; furthermore, it has protected human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the Earth.

The online lecture was attended by university students, the general public, and students from the Pristine Private School in Dubai. It is worth mentioning that this school is representing the UAE for the "Mission X - Train Like an Astronaut Program" that is conducted annually by European Space Agency, ESERO, and the UK Space Agency. This program includes Science-based and Physical Fitness activities that students participate in. Pristine Private School is the coordinator for this program for all schools in the UAE.
