SAASST Summer Students Internship Program 2020

Despite the pandemic situation, the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology opened its doors to 18 students from the University of Sharjah and 3 students from the Higher Colleges of Technology to do their 6-8 weeks internships in its research laboratories.

Most of the internship was virtual with weekly on-site visits whenever it was possible. The SAASST research assistants closely supervised these students during the whole period.

The students were able to join either the CubeSat Laboratory, the Meteorite Center, the Radio Astronomy Laboratory, the Space Weather and Ionospheric Center, or the Sharjah Optical Observatory as per the below table. The students were exposed to first-hand research using the different SAASST research equipment such as the "Decametric Radio Telescope," the "40-Radio Interferometer," the "GNSS" station, the "CADI Ionosonde," the "CubeSat Ground Station," the "UAEMMN," and the optical telescopes. A special arrangement was made on July 22 to allow 15 students to come to the academy and have their internship presentations marking the end of their six-eight weeks' training period. SAASST research assistants attended the presentations as an encouragement for the students.
